Using Multiple Monitors
When you work from home, you might suffer from the same problem I have: too little space and too much work to get done. I've resolved this problem to some degree by adding multiple monitors to my workspace. It's a simple way to get more productivity out of your day without a lot of hassle. Adding a second or even third monitor to your system essentially broadens the number of items you can see on your system at once – it’s sort of like having a huge monitor that’s split in half or thirds, with different programs displayed on each screen.
For example, you can have your e-mail program and instant messaging program displayed on one monitor while you are working diligently on your Word document on the other monitor. Instead of wondering whether you have a new e-mail or message, you can simply glance occasionally at the other monitor to check. If you do receive a message you want to respond to, just move your mouse across monitors and respond, then move your mouse back and keep working in Word. Or, let’s say that you're working in an Access database that has lots of fields that can’t be viewed on a single screen. No problem – just stretch Access across all monitors to facilitate viewing of more columns at once. You can also drag programs from one monitor to another to help you with organization or tasks.
Here's how it works for me: I use three monitors total, with the center monitor acting as my primary screen. I compose articles on that screen. On the screen to my left, I keep email and instant messaging open at all times. On the screen to my right, I open programs that I need to use for research or reference. I might open a Web browser on that right screen, for example, to reference as I type on the center screen.
If it sounds a little too technical for you to set up, don't let the concept frighten you off. It's a huge benefit to use multiple monitors in any home office, and Windows Vista and XP have built-in support to make it a truly simple, fast process. All you need to obtain are the additional monitors, then follow the steps outlined here
